The number of frauds recorded by police has risen by nearly 60 per cent in five years
It represented an increase of more than a fifth on the previous 12 months and a 59 per cent rise in five years.
A further 316,000 frauds were recorded by banks and other industry bodies, meaning the total committed in the 12-month period was likely to be well over half a million, although the ONS warned the two figures may have overlapped.
The details appeared to confirm that criminals are abandoning crimes such as burglary in favour of identity theft and online fraud.
Of the 150,000 cases reported to Action Fraud, which is funded by the Home Office, more than 55,000 were “purchase frauds” such as online shopping scams, and more than 17,000 were computer frauds such as hacking or using “spyware”. A further 19,000 were bank frauds involving credit cards and mortgages.
Jack Dromey, the shadow policing minister, said: “Fraud has increased by 21 per cent, but we know this is just the tip of the iceberg because much online crime goes unreported.”Eleven people across four nations have been arrested in connection with email-hacking websites following a coordinated sting by law enforcement in the US, Romania, India, and China.
According to a statement by the US Attorney's Office, customers would make payments to the operators' PayPal accounts in the scheme, which has affected 6,000 email accounts and was by far the largest of the operations caught in the sting.
Romanian authorities arrested and charged four people in connection with six email hacking websites. Schemes run by the arrested Romanian hackers affected approximately 1,600 email accounts.
Identity theft is a crime whereby criminals impersonate individuals, usually for financial gain. In today's society, you often need to reveal personal bits of information about yourself, such as your social security number, signature, name, address, phone number, cell number or even banking and credit card information. If a thief is able to access this personal information, he or she can use it to commit fraud in your name.
Online Identity Theft
Many people associate identity theft with having a wallet or purse stolen. But did you know that a compromised computer is fast becoming the most likely way that your identity can be stolen? And that spyware is often at the root of this malicious activity?
Here’s how they do it:
Spyware travels over the Internet and infects your computer.
You can encounter spyware and other forms of malware in many ways, including:
- Downloading files or software
- Opening email attachments or clicking on pop-ups
- Visiting devious Web sites
Operating silently, spyware collects your information.
Without your knowledge, spyware runs in the background while it records your Internet browsing habits and keystrokes, monitors the programs you use and collects your personal information, which can lead to credit card fraud and online identity theft
Bank Account Hacking
NSA Phone Hacking
A leaked NSA cyber-arms catalog has shed light on the technologies US and UK spies use to infiltrate and remotely control PCs, routers, firewalls, phones and software from some of the biggest names in IT. According to Appelbaum, the NSA is running a two-stage data dragnet operation. The first stage is TURMOIL, which collects data traffic passively via satellite and cable taps and stores it – in some cases for up to 15 years – for future reference. The NSA does not consider this surveillance because no human operator is involved, just automatic systems. However, this passive capability is backed up by TURBINE, the active intervention side of the NSA, run by its Tailored Access Operations (TAO) hacking squad. By using a selection of hardware and software tools, not to mention physical measures as we'll see later on, the NSA promises that systems can be hacked "at the speed of light," and the staffers in Maryland even took time to build a picture highlighting the capability
